Gabe Montague Music Biography

Gabe Montague, a high school senior from Newton, Massachusetts, has been playing piano and composing music since an early age. He has composed a number of pieces for solo piano, piano and double bass, various small string and wind ensembles, and four pieces for full orchestra, one of which was premiered by the Newton Symphony Orchestra in their Classical Idol concert.

Gabe has been featured at numerous recitals, was a winner of the University of Massachusetts Youth Composition Festival, and was featured at the 2010 and 2011 Dinosaur Annex Music Ensemble Young Composers Festivals. In addition, Gabe was selected as a Finalist in the 2010 and 2011 ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composers Competitions, and was the featured student composer at The Boston Composer's Coalition April 16th 2011 concert where his piece "Ascent" was premiered by Vento Chiaro.

In January of 2013, Gabe was selected from East Coast composers as one of seven high school age winners of the National Association for Music Educators (NAfME) Eastern Division Young Composers contest. Then in October 2013, Gabe won in the National NAfME Student Composers Competition with his winning piece being performed in Nashville Tennessee on October 28th.

Gabe studied piano privately for many years with Margaret Bachelder of the New England Conservatory (NEC) Preparatory Division, and composition with Justin Casinghino, an affiliated artist in the MIT music theory department and the Assistant Director of the Young Artist's Composition Program at the Tanglewood Institute. Gabe also studies piano at the New England Conservatory in Ramon Rivera's upper level piano seminar and has studied jazz at the Rivers Conservatory summer program. At Newton North High School, Gabe plays in the upper jazz band, is the accompanist for the Tiger Bebop vocal ensemble, and is the pianist for Spontaneous Generations improv group as well as numerous other smaller musical groups.
